Difficult to not irritate the fans of Superman by pleading that Batman is more popular than the man of steel. There is no question about it, the man bat is going to get a big beating in the movie. But it is still possible to believe that Batman will beat the son of Krypton in Batman vs Superman ! Bruce Wayne is more or less used to get knocked, while Clark Kent is sensitive only to Kryptonite and he is not used to losing.
The Batman's villains are more numerous
The popularity of a character holds especially on his enemies. All the fans of Superman know some bad guys of Batman, but the opposite is not allways true. OK, there is the develish Lex Luthor and after ? Maybe General Zod for those who saw Man of Steel. While Gotham abounds in naughty boys and in potential opponents to the dressed up billionaire. As we say, a man without enemy is a worthless man.
The Batman's inner conflict is more powerful
Batman fights the crime because when he was a child, his parents were murdered under his eyes. According to the versions, the man bat is more tourmented than in the others. Sometimes, he wants to help, sometimes he is totally obsessed, and from time to time both. While Superman has nos real personal reasons. He lived in a farm with two very kind step-parents and with no problem at all. Naturally, he is the last son of Krypton and sometimes he feels excluded. But actually, many other Kryptonians survived too ! Then, we do not blame him for fighting the crime either, it is all to his credit... But in the end, the world of the man of steel is not very dark in comparison with that of Gotham.
