Description : Wall Street. 2005. Taking advantage of the generalized blindness in the big banks, the media and the government, four outsiders anticipate the explosion of the financial bubble and develop the breakage of the century ! Michael Burry, Mark Baum, Jared Vennett and Ben Rickert : visionnary and outstanding characters who are going to bet against banks and to try to take the pot !
My opinion : First of all, you need to know that this movie is based on a true story and that all these four characters exist and their story is interesting !
I studied the different explanations of the 2008 financial crisis at school and I watched some videos about that but this movie will give you another view about this dramatic event : we follow four main characters embodied by so much charismatic actors, who all understand the signs of the coming financial crisis and who bet a huge amount of money on it. While banks and big financial institutions were loaning money they did not have to households, some people were discovering the imperfections of the financial system and the blindness of the greedy business men.
The producer managed to set up a story about a very complex world which uses a such complicated vocabulary, he is helped with talented actors who make us feel the pressure, the venal and corrupted aspect of Wall Street. I specially enjoyed watching the acting of Christian Bale who is just astonishing as an unbalanced trader who appears as crazy to his colleagues when he bets against the entire financial system ; you should watch this movie at least for this actor ! Brad Pitt and especially Steve Carell bring some humor to the movie. However, I wish I watched more scenes with Ryan Gosling, to my mind he is not enough used by the producer, I remember this actor as a lawyer in Fracture in which he is just perfect, I think he would have been wonderful as a greedy trader.
In a nutshell, this movie describes with precision the 2008 crisis' factors while bringing lightness, humor thanks pretty talented actors.
